![]() The art of Arabian Belly-dancing is an ancient dance of a religious mystique. The movement of the abdomen and hips signify the fertility of life. The bare feet are in connection with the earth. This beautiful dance has brought some controversy as to it's "morality," and is seen as either an art or as vulgar. It's definitely an art and is thought to have existed since the beginning of time. No other dance, with its beautifully exotic sensual movements, brings out the "woman" as this dance does. It is as natural a dance as any other, plus, it's a wonderfully fun way to keep fit.
A full skirt of red and black silk starts at the hips and
a backless bodice,
ornamented in soft mesh, ties at the back and neck which is coined with a
trimmed rib band and a long silk scarf to emphasize the movement of the
hips. The hair is worn losely with the end of a silk scarf tied to a strand
of hair. A small strip of scarf hangs on each side of the head,
which have tiny coins and bells. All of the costume is adorned with as many
dangling coins, beads and bells as you wish. The idea is to make jingling sounds
as you move.
The hair is worn natural, and the eyes are painted by a stick with a round tip.
Kohl is smeared from the inner corner of the eye, both upper and lower lids, and is
extended across. Remember Cleopatra's eyes? That's the effect you want. Arm
and ankle bands, earrings, braclets, and finger cymbals to your thumb and middle
finger of each hand, is the finishing adornment.
Arabian "taqsim," is an eastern instrumental music which
consists of lyres, drums
and flutes. With one foot in
front of the other, the head and hair sways
rhymatically, the arms move gracefully about, as the fingers clink the finger
bells. Hips and abdomen sway and shimmy to the bewitching
tune. It is a constant movement and the effect you try to achieve, is a graceful, snake like motion.
At the end of the dance,
the backbend represents the receiving
of coins for her dance.
Try it, it's alot of fun! |
